Two suspected insurgents were killed and two soldiers were seriously wounded in a shootout between government troops and members of the troupe of the Army of the New People's Monday morning in the province of Sorsogon, the military said.
The 30-minute shootout occurred at 5:30 clock in the city Ginangra in the town of Magallanes, said Maj. Harold Cabunoc, spokesman of the 9th Infantry Division.
Soldiers of the 49th Infantry Battalion responded to a tip from concerned residents of heavily armed men allegedly extorted money from local politicians, said Cabunoc.
Government troops again five M16 rifles, two carbines, rifles, five mines and improvised the scene of battle.
The wounded soldiers were taken to the hospital district Bulan, while two rebels were brought to City Hall for the correct identification of Magallanes, said Cabunoc.
